Properly managed, meetings can be highly productive. Badly managed and they can turn into proverbial talking shops where a lot may be said but little is done. So this course has been designed to help you get the best out of your meetings, whether you’re running them or simply one of the team.

The course covers the main aspects of managing people in meetings. It includes opening and closing remarks, agendas for action, establishing rapport, managing questions, reading body language and dealing with difficult delegates.

Managing Relationships

  • How to interact with meeting attendees effectively to get maximum results
  • What to say, how to say it and how to look, what are the key qualities and traits of good meeting managers?
  • How to handle potentially aggressive remarks and difficult people who want to disrupt the meeting, or who have their own agenda
  • How to manage any conflict during the meeting and remain assertive and in control

Holding Effective Meetings

  • How to participate or hold meaningful and efficient meetings
  • What are pre-meeting preparations?
  • How to prepare an agenda
  • How to prepare, run and finalise a meeting
  • How to avoid wasting time in meetings

Questioning Methods and Strategies for Gaining Engagement

  • How to use various types of questioning techniques to get better answers
  • How to use listening skills to get more information from your attendees
  • How to be imaginative and use interactive strategies to engage all and encourage everyone to contribute

Negotiation and Reaching Agreement/Consensus or 'Agree to Disagree'

  • How to get a fair deal when negotiating with your participants
  • How to set your limits when negotiating and to know what works best
  • How to maximise your long-term results when dealing in repeated negotiations with a particular participant
  • How to reduce tension while negotiating so you can get better results and manage a meeting more effectively.

Sandy Keating and Richard Uridge lead this workshop. Not together (unless it's a big group) but separately depnding on the group's training needs. Richard tends to run those courses where the emphasis needs to be on the mechanics of the meeting - for example, the presentational element or handling the Q and A section. Sandy runs those where the issues are more to do with the psychological - for example, the mix of delegates and how that impacts on the dynamics of the meeting.
